The Nile River

Welcome to our website.  Here you will learn about the Nile River.  This website was created by four kids of the Briarwood Friday E.L. class.  Every Friday they took time and collected lots of information for this website.  Let the adventure begin!
The Nile River is the longest river in the world. It empties into the Mediterranean Sea, also located in Africa.  It is 4,145 miles (6,695 km.) long.  The basin of the river is more than 1,293,049 sqm.  The Nile River is 6,000 feet deep.

The Nile River is actually three rivers in one. There is the White Nile, the Blue Nile, and the Nile itself.  The White and the Blue Nile meet together to create the Nile.  The place where the rivers meet is in a town called Khartoum.

The Nile River used to flood (usually in October) every year, but that stopped after the Aswan High Dam was built.  The Nile River is dammed for irrigation and hydroelectricity.  The Aswan High Dam cost $1,000,000,000.00 (plus tax).  It took 10 years to build it.   Before the completion of the Aswan High Dam in 1971, heavy seasonal rainfall in the southern part of the basin during April and May caused the annual floods in Egypt.   Cairo receives 1" of rain, Khartoum gets 6" of rain.  50" of rain falls at the Aswan High Dam.  The dam has altered the environment of the Nile in Egypt.

The Nile flows through Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, Sudan, and Egypt.  The Nile has eight different zones.  The first zone is called Bhar-al-Jebel, or The River of the Mountain.  The second zone is the Sudd, which is north of the White Nile.  The third zone is the White Nile.   The fourth zone is the Blue Nile.  The fifth zone is the Atbarta River.   The sixth zone is the joining of the Blue and White Nile.  The seventh zone is the river flowing north.  The last zone is the Nile Delta which is 100 mi. (160 km.) long.
