The Blue Nile rises at an altitude of about 1830 mi. in the region of Lake T’ana, in northwestern Ethiopia, where it flows south and then west. It follows a northwestern course in Sudan. The Blue Nile contributes about 66% of the Nile’s total volume before merging with the White Nile at Khartoum. It is known as the Abbai in Ethiopia. Part of it flows through a deep gorge.
