Pharaohs and Pyramids

The largest pyramid in Egypt, the Great Pyramid of Cheops, was built with more than 2,000,000 huge blocks of cut stone, each weighing over 4,000 pounds!  Small pyramids were built beside the tomb for the pharaoh’s main queens.  Beneath the grand gallery which is 8.5 meters high (where the real burial chamber lies) is a fake burial chamber, with an entrance filled with bats.

The Pharaoh's day starts early.  His many servants dress him.  For Egypt to prosper, the pharaoh must win the favor of his fellow gods, so each morning he burnt incenses over an offering to Amon.  Much of the day was taken up with problems of government.  The vizier keeps the pharaoh informed.  In the afternoon he goes to watch work on a temple or pyramid.  The pharaoh often hunts.  Some the most dangerous prey he hunts is lions.

The pharaoh wore different crowns for different occasions.  He wore a blue crown to war. The crown he wore the most was a red and white crowns symbolizing that he was the king of upper and lower Egypt.  The pharaoh also wore a very heavy, highly-decorated crown for ceremonies.
