Rugby Rules

The object of the game is basically the same as that of American football.  It is a subtle, tough mix of mud, blood, and bruised bodies.  There are only two major rules in Rugby football: 1. No passing forward (must pass backwards) 2. If ball is in play, players of the same team may not touch the ball twice in a row.

There are fifteen players on each team: 8 forwards and 7 backs.  Early rules say that games used to last for 5 days and had 300 players!  There are no substitutes during a match unless a player is injured.  There are no time outs and a penalty costs the penalized team three points.  The game lasts 80 minutes with 40 minute halves.  The players are only allowed a 5 minute break.  The goal posts are like football goal posts.  When a team kicks, passes, or carries the ball so that they get it through the other team’s goal post, they score two points.
